Chromosome: 10 (NC_000010.11) Locus: NM_012242.4 (DKK1)
HUGO Symbol: DKK1 Full Name: dickkopf WNT signaling pathway inhibitor 1
Exons: 4 Introns: 3

Description:
The DKK1 gene encodes a member of the dickkopf family of proteins. DKK1 is a secreted protein that antagonizes Wnt signaling and plays an important role in embryonic development. It may also contribute to neoplastic processes and has been implicated in bone disease. The Wnt signaling pathway plays a central role in bone development, homeostasis, as well as bone repair and regeneration following injury. Sickle bone disease is a chronic complication of sickle cell disease (SCD). DKK1 has been implicated in sickle bone damage, either by preventing or treating bone damage in SCD.
