Description:
The KLF6 gene encodes a member of the Kruppel-like family of transcription factors. The zinc finger protein is a transcriptional activator with key roles in several cellular processes and is considered a tumor suppressor. Functional studies showed that KLF6 suppression associates with an increase in γ-globin mRNA and protein levels in primary CD34+ HSPCs and HUDEP-2 cells. This is likely associated with microRNA miR-2355-5p [GeneID: 480], which specifically binds the seed region in the 3'UTR of KLF6. Overexpression of miR-2355-5p suppresses KLF6 and increases γ-globin synthesis. The miR-2355-5p/KLF6 interaction is a candidate therapeutic strategy for the treatment of patients with beta-haemoglobinopathies.
