Description:
MicroRNAs (miRNAs), such as MIRNLET7I, are small, non-coding RNAs that play key roles in the post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression by targeting specific mRNAs. Homo sapiens (human) hsa-let-7i-5p sequence is a product of MIRLET7I. The let-7i-5p is an erythrocytic miRNA implicated in sickle cell disease (SCD) and malaria pathogenesis. It is differentially expressed in plasma exosomes isolated from individuals with different sickle hemoglobin variants. Functional studies in vitro revealed an increased expression of let-7i-5p in HbSS and HbAS erythrocytes without malaria. Predictions of let-7i-5p gene targets indicate that it may alter SCD and malaria pathogenesis through inflammatory pathways. Let-7i-5p is a candidate biomarker of pathogenesis for both diseases.
