Description:
STARD13 belongs to a family of proteins that contain a steroidogenic acute regulatory protein (StAR)-related lipid transfer (START) domain implicated in lipid metabolism, lipid trafficking and cell signalling. The encoded protein is a member of the RhoGAP subfamily and functions as a major regulator of RhoGTPases, which play critical roles in actin cytoskeletal organization, cell cycle progression, cell proliferation and cell motility. STARD13 contains a sterile α-motif (SAM) for protein-protein interaction, a GTPase-activating protein (GAP) domain and a conserved START domain. STARD13 exhibits GAP activity towards the small RhoGTPases, RhoA and Cdc42, thereby inactivating them. It acts as a tumor suppressor in hepatoma cells. Polymorphisms in this gene associated with acute chest syndrome and osteonecrosis in sickle cell patients. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been described for this gene.
