Description:
The IL1R1 gene, formerly known as type I IL-1R, encodes a cytokine receptor that belongs to the interleukin-1 (IL-1) receptor (IL-1R) family. It binds to IL-1α and β, its receptor antagonist IL-1Ra and the truncated form of IL-38. Upon ligand binding, IL-1R1 further binds IL-1R accessory chains to form signaling receptor complexes. The biological effects of IL-1 are mainly inflammatory and include the induction of the production of inflammatory cytokines, toxic reactive oxygen and nitrogen species, prostaglandins, proteolytic enzymes and a variety of other factors. Genetic variance in IL1R1 gene associated with episodes of pain in patients with sickle cell disease.
