Description:
MicroRNAs (miRNAs), such as MIR200B, are small, non-coding RNAs that play key roles in the post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression by targeting specific mRNAs. MIR200B plays a key role in cellular iron homeostasis through regulation of iron storage via ferritin. Both ferritin heavy (FtH1) and light (FtL) chains are regulated by MIR200B. Blood transfusion was shown to significantly affect MIR200B expression. In fact, MIR200B expression was significantly lower in transfusion-dependent (TDT) β-thalassemia patients and was associated with excess iron in liver and cardiac tissues. It is postulated that MIR200B could be a biomarker for cellular damage under condition of tissue iron excess.
