Names

Common Name: SOD1 Type: Gene
Chromosome: 21 (NC_000021.9) Locus: NG_008689.1 (SOD1)
HUGO Symbol: SOD1 Full Name: superoxide dismutase 1
Exons: 5 Introns: 4

Description:
The SOD1 gene encodes superoxide dismutase-1, a major cytoplasmic antioxidant enzyme that metabolizes superoxide radicals to molecular oxygen and hydrogen peroxide, thus providing a defense against oxygen toxicity. Studies reported an up-regulation in gene and protein expression of SOD1 in β-thalassaemia intermedia patients compared to healthy individuals. This could result from compensatory mechanisms in response to the high levels of ROS observed in β-thalassaemia intermedia.
