Names

Common Name: FCMR Type: Gene
Chromosome: 1 (NC_000001.11) Locus: NM_005449.5 (FCMR )
HUGO Symbol: FCMR Full Name: Fc fragment of IgM receptor
Exons: 8 Introns: 7

Description:
Fc receptors specifically bind to the Fc region of immunoglobulins (Igs) to mediate the unique functions of each Ig class. FCMR encodes an Fc receptor for IgM. Transmission of infectious agents, including viruses, bacteria and parasites are a major risk in blood transfusions, and could lead to an increse in the level of serum immunoglobulins in transfused β-thalassaemia patients. The removal of the spleen, one of the major lymphoid organs to clear blood infections, has been shown to impact serum immunoglobulin levels in β-thalassaemia. In general, β-thalassaemia patients are prone to many bacterial and viral infections, which can stimulate the immune system and lead to an increase in serum immunoglobulin levels. Genetic variance in FCMR associated with disease severity in β-thalassaemia HbE patients.
