Description:
This gene is a member of the MYB family of transcription factors, which encode for a helix-turn-helix protein composed of three DNA-binding domains; an N-terminal DNA-binding domain, a central transcriptional activation domain and a C-terminal domain involved in transcriptional repression. MYB is required for normal hematopoiesis. It is highly expressed in immature hematopoietic cells and downregulated during terminal differentiation. Dysregulation of MYB activity can promote leukemic transformation. MYB is considered to be an oncogene. It is involved in the regulation of globin switching during erythroid development by directly activating key γ-globin repressor genes (such as KLF1 and BCL11A). Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants.
