Description:
The HLA-G gene encodes a non-classical HLA class I molecule with important tolerogenic functions against innate and adaptive cellular responses. For example, the expression of HLA-G in pregnancy or allograft transplantation has been linked to a better acceptance of the fetus or the allograft. Variable HLA-G expression has been documented in several autoimmune diseases, viral infections, and cancer diseases. Genetic variance in HLA-G associated with cholelithiasis, or gallstones, in sickle cell disease.
