GeneID: 39

Names

Common Name: TAL1 Type: Gene
Chromosome: 1 (NC_000001.11) Locus: N/A
HUGO Symbol: TAL1 Full Name: T-cell acute lymphocytic leukemia 1
Exons: 5 Introns: 4

Description:
The gene encodes a basic helix-loop-helix transcription factor that binds to the E-box motif (CANNTG) of eukaryotic transcriptional enhancers. TAL1 is essential for normal hematopoiesis throughout development. Dysregulation of TAL1 activity in mice results in embryonic lethality due to severe anaemia. It is potentially involved in leukemogenesis since translocations associated with T-cell malignancies also deregulate its expression. The encoded protein interacts with erythroid-specific activators (such as GATA-1, LMO2 and LDB1) to mediate chromatin looping between the β-globin LCR (LCRB) and γ-globin (HBG) genes to activate their transcription.
