GeneID: 351

Names

Common Name: EHMT1 Type: Gene
Chromosome: 9 (NC_000009.12) Locus: NG_011776.1 (EHMT1)
HUGO Symbol: EHMT1 Full Name: euchromatic histone lysine methyltransferase 1
Exons: 27 Introns: 26

Description:
The protein encoded by this gene is a histone methyltransferase that specifically mono- and di-methylates the lysine-9 position of histone H3 (H3K9me1 and H3K9me2, respectively). Together with EHMT2, forms a heterodimeric complex (EHMT1/2) that catalyzes the methylation of H3K9. This methylation is associated with gene silencing in euchromatin. EHMT1/2 complex inhibition activates fetal globin gene expression and leads to an increase in the activating mark H3K9Ac at the γ-globin gene locus in adult human erythroid cells.
