Names

Common Name: HSF1 Type: Gene
Chromosome: 8 (NC_000008.11) Locus: NM_005526.4 (HSF1)
HUGO Symbol: HSF1 Full Name: heat shock transcription factor 1
Exons: 13 Introns: 12

Description:
The product of the HSF1 gene functions as a stress-inducible and DNA-binding transcription factor that plays a central role in the heat shock response (HSR), leading to the expression of a large class of molecular chaperones, also called heat shock proteins (HSPs), which assist in refolding or degrading injured intracellular proteins. HSF1 is recognized as a putative regulator of fetal γ-globin gene expression during eryrthroid differentiation. Mechanistically, HSF1 binds to the LCR HS3 region via its canonical binding motif (TTCnnGAAnnTTC), indicating that this gene is involved in LCR-mediated long-range regulation of γ-globin and β-globin genes during erythropoiesis.
