Description:
PDGFRA (platelet derived growth factor receptor alpha) encodes a cell surface tyrosine kinase receptor for members of the platelet-derived growth factor family. These growth factors are mitogens for cells of mesenchymal origin. Studies suggest that this gene plays a role in organ development, wound healing, and tumor progression. KIT (KIT proto-oncogene, receptor tyrosine kinase) encodes the human homolog of the proto-oncogene c-kit, a type 3 transmembrane receptor for MGF (mast cell growth factor, also known as stem cell factor). Genetic variance in the PDGFRA-KIT intergenic region associated with haematological parameters (e.g., haematocrit level and red blood cell count).
