Description:
The encoded protein is a member of the G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) superfamily. GPCRs consist of 7 transmembrane domains and transduce extracellular signals through heterotrimeric G proteins. The GPR17 receptor responds to both uracil nucleotides (e.g., UDP-glucose) and cysteinyl-leukotrienes (CysLTs; e.g., LTD4). Functional studies suggested that GPR17 acts as a mediator of the inflammatory effects induced by nucleotides and CysLTs. Variations in this gene associated with acute chest syndrome (ACS) in patients with sickle cell disease. ACS is a form of acute lung injury caused by vaso-occlusion within the pulmonary microvasculature. Etiologies either trigger vaso-occlusion (e.g., infection, asthma, hypoventilation) or are a result of vaso-occlusion (e.g., bone marrow and fat emboli).
