Common Name: NES Type: Gene
Chromosome: 1 (NC_000001.11) Locus: NG_012300.1 (NES)
HUGO Symbol: NES Full Name: nestin
Exons: 4 Introns: 3

Description:
The NES gene encodes nestin, a type VI intermediate filament protein that is prominently expressed in neural stem/progenitor cells during central nervous system (CNS) development. An enhancer element residing in the intron 2 of the NES gene directs its expression in the CNS. Nestin is expressed in proliferating endothelial progenitor cells and may be useful as a marker protein for angiogenesis. It is expressed in the mesenchyme but not the epithelium of the developing pancreas. It is expressed in a variety of tissues including brain, bone marrow and immune system. It seems to play a role in several types of malignancies, such as neuroblastoma, glioma, pancreatic cancers, as well as in tumor vasculature. Nestin seems to have an impact on key stem cell functions, including self-renewal, proliferation, differentiation and migration. A NES variant associated with leukocytosis in sickle cell anaemia, suggesting a potential role for this gene in haematopoiesis.
