Description:
The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the transmembrane 4 superfamily, also known as the tetraspanin family. CD81 is a cell surface glycoprotein that is known to form complexes with integrins. CD81 encodes a molecule involved in the signal modulation of B lymphocytes and appears to promote muscle cell fusion and support myotube maintenance. The gene is localized in a tumor-suppressor gene region and is thus considered a candidate gene for malignancies. It may play an important role in the regulation of lymphoma cell growth. Polymorphisms in the CD81 gene showed strong association with alloimmunization in sickle cell patients.
