Description:
This gene encodes an 88-kDa cell surface glycoprotein expressed on a wide variety of cell types, including platelets, monocytes, microvascular endothelial cells, and erythrocytes, among others. It acts as a receptor for extracellular matrix proteins such as type I collagen and thrombospondin (TSP). Since the latter constitutes a group of widely distributed proteins involved in a variety of adhesive processes, the encoded protein may have important functions as a cell adhesion molecule. It can form a complex with both TSP and αVβ3 (endothelial integrin) to mediate adhesion of sickle erythrocytes to vascular endothelium, thereby contributing to vaso-occlusion in sickle cell disease. Sickle erythrocytes from patients on hydroxyurea therapy have been shown to exhibit a reduced surface expression of CD36 with a concomitant decrease in adhesive properties. It directly mediates cytoadherence of Plasmodium falciparum parasitized erythrocytes and it binds long chain fatty acids and may function in the transport and/or as a regulator of fatty acid transport. Mutations in this gene cause platelet glycoprotein deficiency. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants have been found for this gene.
