Chromosome: 14 (NC_000014.9) Locus: NG_017089.1 (LGALS3)
HUGO Symbol: LGALS3 Full Name: galectin 3
Exons: 6 Introns: 5

Description:
This gene encodes a member of the galectin family of carbohydrate binding proteins. Members of this protein family have binding affinity for beta-galactosides through evolutionary conserved sequence elements of carbohydrate-recognition domain (CRD). The encoded protein also contains an N-terminal proline-rich tandem repeat domain through which is able to form oligomers, allowing it to bind to multivalent saccharide ligands. This protein localizes to the extracellular matrix, the cytoplasm and the nucleus. It plays a role in numerous cellular functions including apoptosis, innate immunity, cell adhesion and T-cell regulation, exhibits antimicrobial activity against bacteria and fungi, and plays a key role in phagocytosis of opsonized erythrocytes. It is considered a key molecule in the host defense against pneumococcal infection by augmenting neutrophil function. Polymoprhisms in the LGALS3 gene that affect serum galectin 3 levels have been associated with frequent respiratory tract infection and vaso-occlusive crisis in children with sickle cell anaemia. Alternate splicing results in multiple transcript variants.
