Common Name: AGT Type: Gene
Chromosome: 1 (NC_000001.11) Locus: NG_008836.1 (AGT)
HUGO Symbol: AGT Full Name: angiotensinogen
Exons: 5 Introns: 4

Description:
The AGT gene encodes the plasma protein angiotensinogen, which serves as the precursor of angiotensin, a peptide hormone involved in the regulation of blood pressure, body fluid and electrolyte homeostasis. Angiotensinogen is mainly synthesized by the liver and is the only known substrate of renin, a protease secreted by the juxtaglomerular cells of the kidney. Its production can be enhanced by angiotensin II in a positive feedback loop, as well as plasma corticosteroid, estrogen and thyroxine hormone levels. Polymorphisms in this gene associated with risk of stroke in individuals with sickle cell disease.
