Description:
The encoded protein is a potent proinflammatory cytokine, member of the interleukin 1 cytokine family. It plays an essential role in the regulation of immune responses and has been linked to the pathogenesis of diverse autoimmune and inflammatory diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis. IL-1β is produced by a variety of cell types, such as haematopoietic cells and tissue macrophages, as an inactive 31 kDa precursor. The IL-1β precursor is proteolytically cleaved to its active form by the proinflammatory protease caspase-1, which is itself activated via recruitment to a multi-protein complex termed the inflammasome. This cytokine binds to specific receptors of the IL-1R family to exert diverse biological processes. Polymorphisms in this gene have been implicated in vaso-occlusion through the processes of inflammation, cellular adhesion, signalling, transport or coagulation in sickle cell disease patients.
