GeneID: 140

Names

Common Name: LTC4S Type: Gene
Chromosome: 5 (NC_000005.10) Locus: NG_028161.1 (LTC4S)
HUGO Symbol: LTC4S Full Name: leukotriene C4 synthase
Exons: 5 Introns: 4

Description:
The encoded protein plays a key role in the production of cysteinyl leukotrienes, potent inflammatory lipid mediators synthesized from arachidonic acid by several different types of inflammatory cells. LTC4 synthase catalyzes the conjugation of leukotriene A4 (LTA4) with reduced glutathione to form leukotriene C4 (LTC4), which is further processed extracellularly to produce LTD4 and LTE4 by sequential amino acid removal from the glutathione tripeptide moiety. LTC4, LTD4 and LTE4 leukotrienes act as paracrine mediators pertinent to asthma and allergic diseases. Polymorphisms in this gene associated with stroke in sickle cell patients.
