Names

Common Name: MMP3 Type: Gene
Chromosome: 11 (NC_000011.10) Locus: NG_012100.1 (MMP3)
HUGO Symbol: MMP3 Full Name: matrix metallopeptidase 3
Exons: 10 Introns: 9

Description:
The encoded protein belongs to the family of matrix metalloproteinases (MMP), which facilitate the degradation and remodelling of extracellular matrix (ECM) during both physiological and disease processes. MMPs are expressed as inactive pro-proteins that become activated via proteolytic cleavage. MMP3 is mainly produced by connective tissue cells and initiates degradation of the proteoglycan, fibronectin, laminin and type IV collagen components of ECM. It is associated with atherosclerosis, arthritis and cancer. Polymorphisms in this gene associated with stroke in sickle cell patients.
