HUGO Symbol: PLA2G4A Full Name: phospholipase A2 group IVA
Exons: 18 Introns: 17

Description:
The encoded protein is a member of the phospholipase A2 superfamily (PLA2), and specifically of the Ca2+-dependent cytosolic PLA2 IV group (cPLA2) that preferentially targets arachidonic acid-containing phospholipids in the plasma membrane. The cPLA2 enzymes consist of a Ca2+-dependent lipid binding domain and a catalytic α/β hydrolase domain, and they are regulated through phosphorylation by mitogen-activated protein kinase. They catalyse the release of arachidonic acid in response to immunoinflammatory stimuli, which is further metabolized into eicosanoid inflammatory mediators, such as leukotrienes, prostaglandins, thromboxanes and lipoxins, that are involved in hemodynamic regulation, inflammatory responses and other cellular processes. The reaction also produces lysophospholipids that are converted into platelet-activating factor. Polymorphisms in this gene associated with painful crisis in sickle cell patients. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants.
